Orchids grow all year round so it is not difficult to find something flowering during every month of the year. At Southern Suburbs Orchid Society (SSOS), members grow a wide variety of orchids and seldom have difficulties finding something to bench each month. Here are some examples of what we exhibited in our monthly competition for judging in 2022.
December
There were 45 entries to choose from when members placed their votes in the December virtual voting competition. There were 17 entries in Novice, 17 in Intermediate and 11 in the Open Section. It is a time of year where other kinds of orchids flower, such as the Brassia and the Encyclia as indicated above.
November
There were 58 entries to choose from when members placed their votes in the November virtual voting competition. There were 28 entries in Novice, 15 in Intermediate and 15 in the Open Section. Its the time of year for sarcs, bifrenaria and miniature cascading cymbidiums.
October
There were 44 entries in the October virtual voting competition. There were 19 entries in Novice, 15 in Intermediate and 10 in the Open section. It is the time of year for softcane dendrobiums, bletilla striata and sarcochilus orchids to flower.
September
There were 65 entries to choose from when members placed their votes in the September virtual voting competition. There were 25 entries in Novice, 15 in Intermediate and 25 in the Open Section.
August
There were 69 entries to choose from when members placed their votes in the August virtual voting competition. There were 30 entries in the Novice Section, 15 in Intermediate and 24 in the Open Section. See the full set of entries for August.
July
There were 67 entries in the July Virtual Voting Competition. Novice Section had the most entries – 27. Intermediate Section had 20 entries and Open Section also had 20 entries. Despite the very cold winter and a couple of frosts, the cymbidiums are starting to bloom. see the full set of entries in July.
June
There were 46 entries in the June Virtual Voting Competition. Novice section had the most entries – 20. Intermediate Section had 14 entries and Open Section had 12 entries. These are the complete entries for the June competition.
May
The SSOS May Members Virtual Vote competition saw 48 entries by 12 club members who competed in Novice (16 entries), Intermediate (19 entries) and Open Sections (13 entries). It is a time of the year to see Cattleya and Laelia hybrids begin to flower. Below are the images which members provided for the competition. April

March
The March of the Miltonias, is what was flowering. We held our March virtual voting competition and members entered 42 plants for members judging.
February
February was the ‘Epi’-center of the Epidendrum, with members submitting Epi’s of a variety of colours. Members provided 45 wonderful flowering orchids which made for difficult decisions when voting. Here are the entries for February.
January
- Never mind the phrase: ‘What a good year for the roses’, this is a good year for the stanhopeas. At the January virtual voting competition, there were 13 stanhopeas submitted amongt the 48 entries. See the full listing for January.
