Upcoming Visit:
This Sunday, 22 April at 10.00 a.m. members of the SSOS will be visiting the Central Park Conservatory in Malvern (Mel59: G10) which is the home to John Varigos’ orchid collections. He began his collection with his first orchid in 1977. The conservatory contains over 600 of his orchids which hail from Asia, Central America, South America, Madagascar, and Australia. A fellow orchid fanatic has taken over the other side of the conservatory to include his collection. This collection includes Vandas, Ludisia discolour, dendrochilum tenellum, agraecum sesquipedale.
- Varigos is the editor of the Orchid Species Society of Victoria (OSSV) newsletter and Vice President of the Victorian branch of the Australian Native Orchid Society (ANOS).
The elegantly curved steel frame conservatory was imported from Europe in the 1920s. It is one of the oldest public conservatories in Victoria.
- After the conservatory tour, members are invited to ‘bring a plate’ so that we can all enjoy a morning tea together and discuss the wonders of John’s collection.
